I like a visor with a velcro back and sun glasses
August 25th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
I’ve tried every headband out there, and they all just “pop” off my head!! I finally just gave up. But the ONE thing that really helps my game is my black sunglasses. They’re no special brand, but they’ve become my “signature” look when I’m on the mound pitching! It’s part of my “Power in a Ponytail” that intimidates the batter! Plus, it does help with the whole sun thing too!
When I’ve met other players at camps or at tournaments and I have my sunglasses on, they always remember me AND the fact that I struck them out!! Ha Ha!!

Good fitting sunglasses with interchangeable lenses for different lighting. My daughter has a pair of Tifosi sunglasses. I plan on upgrading mine for coaching next year.

Many of our girls are wearing facemasks and visors and hats can’t be worn with them (atleast not comfortably). Headbands and sunglasses are what most of our girls wear.
August 25th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Our girls are wearing dark sunglasses during the day, with their put into pony-tails. Some are using pre-wrap to put their hair up.
August 25th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
I prefer visors for the girls. If they have the face masks in the field, then they don’t wear anything because the face mask takes care of it. The girls aren’t much into caps because they trap the heat in and makes them even hotter. My girls have always prefered visors.
August 25th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Our coach requires our infield and pitchers to wear facemasks. They would like to wear visors but they don’t work well with the facemasks. Most of the girls hate their facemasks but their parents know safety is more important. Would be nice to see a new design come out that would be comfortable and safe.
August 25th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Our team likes to use pre-wrap to keep our hair out of our face.It is quick and easy, plus it comes in different colors to match our uniforms.
August 25th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
My 13 year old daughter usually wears no head gear or a visor. On the sunny days sun glasses also.
August 25th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Almost all the girls on my team wear headbands. Its the sparkly ones that you see on tv. They get them off softballjunky.com or something. They do cost 10 dollars a pop but they work really good and don’t fall off. And for a little inspiration it says DREAM & BELIEVE on the back strap. Only the outfielders wear visors, because thats the only position we feel that needs one. Most of the infielders wear the shades. I too am a pitcher and i feel that the shades have to be on whenever i pitch, even if its cloudy. I feel its my “poker face” and intimidates people.

Nothing beats a good old fashioned baseball hat. It keeps the head out of the sun and the rain. It also keeps the hair out of the eyes.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Most of all of our team wears sunglasses and most of them wear visors to help keep the sun out.
August 25th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
I am a big proponent of sunglasses for the girls. They reduce the damage to the eye caused by too much sun exposure over time and they are life savers for a pop up into the sun. The girls had a tradition that each one would take turns buying a roll of hair bow material for the games. We had some really cool looks. If we won, the girls would tie that ribbon on their equipment bags.
August 25th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
I usually have my daughter where a headband just to keep here hair out of her face. I like some of the other ideas here though and will suggest them to her. This is a great informational tool. Keep the festival going.
August 25th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
My girls prefer sunglasses, but I have a few that love their visors and prewrap for headbands. Then there are some that don’t wear any of it! I personally don’t ever go with out my visor, must be a coach thing.
August 25th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
i wear a head band and sunglasses when I’m catching but at third its just my hat or visor with the sunglasses
August 25th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Having been around the game for some time, I like the facemasks. I also know the girls won’t wear them unless they have suffered an injury or are required by rule (association, team, league, coach or parent). If a rule was passsed and enforced by an association, we would probably see better designs as more manufacturers would enter the market. I’ve seen my share of nasty facial injuries from a batted ball. Many girls will not play fast pitch ball beyond high school, yet the injuries can be life long. I would be in favor of ASA or NFHS making it a rule that all infielders wear a facemask. Looking a little geeky for an hour and a half is a lot better than living with scars (visible or not) the rest of their life. Batters and base coaches (under the age of adult) are required to wear a helmet with a facemask anytime they are on the field. Infielders are exposed the entire half of the inning; think about it.
The balls are coming in faster and leaving faster than ever before, the pitching distance and base distances have remained the same. It only takes one shot and the odds of escaping without an injury are fewer. Exposure is increased by more games played, more developed players, and technical advancements in equipment.
If you have been around the game long enough, you know that sound (like a melon thump) of someone being struck in the head. My heart sinks everytime I hear it knowing measures could have been taken.
Every year I let my team know that facemasks are available, yet players refuse to wear one. A mandate would make the game a little safer and save some smiles. I hope I see it happen in the near future.

My girls all have visors and sun glasses but at the end of the season if they did not need the visor they replaced it with a head band they thought they looked cooloer/better?? I know with hair bands I have been buying the gummy back ones I and not sure if that is the right term but these stay in place and keep the hair out of the eyes. Walgreens carries these. This comes from a bald coach so you know I know what I am talking about. In the early spring my girls are wearing beanies or ear warmers we have both in team colors and the cold games they are well worth it.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Facemasks
I have one girl on my team that wears the mask. I wish my daughter who plays 3rd would wear one. She will not. I can barely get her to wear her mouth piece. I require all my infielders wear a mouth piece. But would like a facemask. One girl listens and she takes some ribbing from other teams for it.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
I prefer to wear a visor and pre-wrap to keep my hair out of my face. I also almost always wear my Kelly sunglasses with interchangeable lenses.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:17 am
Pre-wrap really helps keep hair out of the face and eyes. Sunglasses are preferred by infielders.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:35 am
Visors are always the way to go. The girls can put their hair into a ponytail and have no problems with the hair getting in their way.
Sunglasses should be optional but always worn on very sunny days!
August 26th, 2008 at 2:03 am
My daughter always has her visor on. Not only does it help with the sun but it helps keep her hair out of her eyes. Headbands don’t work for her.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
My daughter loves to wear her vision. She wants to wear sunglasses, but has trouble keeping them on her face when the visor is pulled down. Apparently she has too small a head for the visor!
August 26th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Gerry, I agree 100% about the facemasks. I’ve been around the game for 26 years and have seen a lot of nasty hits to the face and several lost/damaged teeth. My daughter pitches, and I wouldn’t allow her on the mound without a face mask. All but one of our infielders wear a mask (all personal choice) but I would encourage all players to do so. Start using them while your players are young so they get use to them. All of our girls have adjusted very well to them.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Our girls use headbands to keep their bangs out of their face and visors. They all have matching sunglasses (white and baby blue) for day games.
August 26th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Does anyone know of a league that has mandated face masks? It would be nice to have a precedent somewhere
August 26th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
My oldest like the Pre Wrap in her hair, and has every team colour depending on the day and outfit we wear.
The younger one likes the mirrored shades in the summer.
She wore them at Nationals and had a great tourney.
As a pitcher, they do look rough and tumble.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
My daughter wears a Bangers Face Mask which works great, she has great visibility. She jokes about feeling like a chicken in it with a beak and will then imitate a chicken (gotta love gumption!). All joking aside I am an ED RN and have seen too many broken noses, shattered orbital bones and some Basilar Skull fractures….Nikki feels more secure having it on. That’s a good combo for me!
My daughter wears sun glasses when she doesn’t pitch or bat…Her favorite pair I bought her at a tourney where our team took second place.
I am glad they have required the face masks and are stressing safety. I think we are getting better at whipping balls out at lower ages. What my ten year old team was stepping in to hit out was down right intimidating and I know the girls will just keep getting faster!
August 26th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
My team wears visors. I think it is scary for the girls when they face a pitcher with a mask on. I saw a team wearing fruit baskets on there heads. That was cool.
August 27th, 2008 at 1:31 am
Glasses are a must. Expecially for thoughs flyballs in the sun.
August 27th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
Ponytail holders, wider Goodies headbands with the grippers so they stay in place, & sunglasses
August 27th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Visor - cant live without it. Ive been called Bullwinkle before but dont care. I carry my pencils in the back of my visor for my notes.
August 27th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
I prefer the Head Band because they dont blow off in the wind, there are some amazing designs out there but there isn’t a company that I use more than an other. I also like Visors in the Heat to help with he sun they stay cool but are able to have shade for the eyes
August 27th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
I wear a pair of sunglasses (when playing center field) and pre-wrap on my head to keep my hair off of my face. When I am on the mound, I wear a face mask, with no sunglasses, but I do still wear pre-wrap in my hair. I hate to wear hats, or visors.
August 27th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
My daughter likes to pitch with nothing but her dark oakley shades and a pony tail holder no visor no head band.
August 27th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
My daughter’s team ordered matching emasks this year and they really look sharp, tailored and I think it makes a united statement for them all to have the same type and color. My daughter says that it fits better that the rawlings we bought at a local big box store.
August 27th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Visors and Shades here in AZ!!!
August 28th, 2008 at 2:56 am
I prefer to wear a headband, I don’t swaet as much!
August 29th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
My daughter’s wear pre wrap, we have it in every color and go thru case’s of it in a year with all the sport’s they play
August 30th, 2008 at 3:28 am
You definitely need your girls to wear to wear either a visor or cap when the sun can play a factor in fielding. Although we teach to block the sun with the glove, the added bill of the visor or cap helps.
Most of out girls prefer visors because they wear ponytails.
Sunglasses are a must here in Florida for those sunny days.
August 30th, 2008 at 8:25 am
Here we need lots of sunscreen and a visor for sure. I would love to wear a visor, but I don’t have the “hair” for it. So… ball caps it is for me!
August 30th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
The weather is crazy here- either hot or cold so we have headbands for the heat and earwarmers. The wind bites so it keeps the kids warm.
August 30th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
I usually have my hair in a ponytail but I also use prewrap as a headband. It stays in where other headbands fell out. I also wear sunglasses. Since I play third at times I wear a Defender Facemask. I found it easy to get on and it is more compact than the Gameface. After witnessing an opposing pitcher get hit in the eye with a line drive our Coach made it a requirement that all players playing 1st, 3rd, and pitching wear a facemask. We didn’t argue since it was the scariest thing we have ever seen.
August 31st, 2008 at 4:38 am
There’s nothing like just a plain old ponytail, with some gel and an elatic headband. It’s simple, it works, and it looks nice.
August 31st, 2008 at 1:53 pm
My daughter wears glasses so I bought her Transitions lenses… she LOVES them! She wears a visor in the outfield, but I make her wear a Facemask in the infield to protect her glasses.
